Autumn skincare: how to keep the glow

Tight skin, rough knuckles, chapped lips? 

The days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping and the air is becoming drier. Autumn has officially arrived – about to wreak havoc from head to toe. 

Rapidly changing temperatures, from artificially heated indoors to cold walks outside can have a huge effect on our skin.

But, as a time of transition, autumn is possibly the best time to rejuvenate and repair your skin, correcting any damage from the summer and preparing your complexion for winter.

But this doesn’t mean slap on a load of moisturiser and hope for the best – this can result in blocked pores and an outbreak of spots. Luckily, working in the aesthetics industry I’ve been able to ask a few experts how to show autumn who’s boss.

EXFOLIATE

We may be sweating less but our skin still gets a build-up of dead skin cells and sebum over winter, so weekly exfoliation can keep your face smooth.

HYDRATE

One of the biggest things that I notice throughout the cooler months is that I don’t consciously remember to drink enough water. I choose a cup of tea over a glass of water and then I’m lucky if I get time to drink that before it goes cold… Sophie ‘half a cup’ Attwood is how I’m known in my office. It is important though and I notice a huge difference to my skin when I drink enough water. I actually went out and bought a bottle that reminds me to drink water and, as gimmicky as that may sound, it’s definitely having an impact on the amount of water I’m remembering to drink.

For the delicate skin around my eyes I make sure that I use a hydrator (not a moisturiser) every day. I particularly like the rose hip oil from The Ordinary at the moment. I apply a couple of drops of this in the evening and wake up with my skin feeling plump and hydrated.

SPF

My doctors have told me this over and over and over again. Just because it is winter, it doesn’t mean you should put away your SPF. Whilst there is less UVB around in winter, levels of UVA (or UV-ageing as it is known in the dermatology world) are still significant enough to age our skin.

Again, I prefer to use the SPF from ZO. It’s not greasy on the skin and extremely lightweight. As UVB is the wavelength that stimulates vitamin D production, levels can drop in the winter months so I sometimes supplement this with vitamin D tablets. I’m also a huge fan of IV drips which give you a huge boost throughout the winter months. Make sure that you go to a trusted provider for these so that you know you have the best, safest solutions injected.
